I managed to sneak in a few movies recently in between episodes of _Jekyll_ and _Torchwood_. In no particular order:
Absolutely hilarious. Just a great crime / detective film with a much "lighter" feel than you normally get from movies of this genre. Highly recommended.
A spoof on Michael Bay action thrillers, but not in a _Scary Movie_ "stupid spoof" kind of way. It's well done and has really funny moments, especially if you're well versed in movies like _Bad Boys 2_
Visually stunning. I was expected a little more from the Neil Gaiman screen play, but a beautiful film nonetheless. The only real problem I had was I felt like I was watching the "people" in Shrek films get torn apart instead of actual people I could relate to. The action is quite good though, and the camera angles you can get because it's an animated film make for some really interesting perspectives on the action.
A much more traditional crime / detective story, with some really solid performances. It's a little depressing, but does tell a strong story. If you're someone who has spent any amount of time in Boston, then you'll probably really appreciate some of the local touches (Lunch at "The Chart House" for example). Language is kind of rough, so I don't know if I could recommend it to everyone, but I can see why it got such critical acclaim.
Excellent Western film, with Russell Crowe as the charismatic criminal. Though you can sort of anticipate how the film is going to end, it's the journey to that point that is really strong. Crowe is magnificent. I don't think Western's appeal to everyone, but if you're even a slight fan of the Genre and you should pick this up.
An adaptation of Darwyn Cooke's comic book of the same name, this film stays pretty true to the source material. If you've read the book (and I'm guessing almost all comic fans have) then the movie is worth seeing. I don't think DC has quite reached the level of quality that Marvel has with their direct-to-DVD movie releases, but this is a solid effort. Unfortunately, it still falls sort of their work on _Batman: The Animated Series_ which is probably the finest example of comic-related animation to this day.
