Caitlin Lowe & the Wildcats repeat as nationals champs against Lindsay Schutzler and the Lady Vols
Caitlin Lowe lead the Arizona Wildcats in a 5-0 victory over the Lady Vols to capture back-to-back national titles. Arizona pitcher Taryne Mowatt pitched all 60 innings of the College Word Series and showed that she belongs in the class of a Monica Abbott. Though a cursory Google search on Mowatt will probably return more results for her revealing Halloween costumes than her pitching prowess, the Wildcats leaned all their ace all week and she delivered.
Congratulations to the Wildcats on their achievement.
On a related note, I started posting at the beginning of this tournament, since this is really the last class of girls I followed when I was in school. With Lowe, Schutzler, (and last year...Cat Osterman) out of the college game, most of my ties to the sport have been severed and with the Olympics not having softball anymore, I'm not sure how up I'll stay on it. Keeping that in mind, it was an excellent championship series...unless you're a Lady Vols fan.

I started posting at the beginning of this tournament, too...how funny. I wasn't going to watch, since Texas didn't make it (I wrote a couple stories on Osterman for a couple of newspapers, and that turned me into a UT softball fan) but then I saw AU's super regional where Lowe ran face-first into the wall and they still came back from 5-0 to beat CSF 11-6. I decided to follow them through the WCWS. It was a great series and I'm disappointed that the 2008 Olympics in Beijing will be the last featuring softball unless the exploratory committee that's been formed manages to change the committee's mind.
I used to follow Texas because I knew of Osterman from her pitching on the Olympic team, and my roommate in college got a kick out of their catcher (Megan Willis) because she'd catch the whole game but still have enough energy to be constantly dancing in the dugout....I think it was about 2 years ago when in one of the semi- or quarter final games, Texas didn't start Osterman, they started their #2 (who gave up like 3 runs) and then brought Osterman in for the rest of the game...I think I yelled at the TV for 20 minutes wondering what on the Earth their coach was thinking...
Yup, me too -- except I was working for a newspaper and our deadlines were late, so I would go home at like 1 a.m. and just stay up for the games and then crash at, like, 7 in the morning.
I saw that UT game, and I'm pretty sure I had the same reaction. Sometimes I wonder what goes through some of these coaches' minds...
