Well, I'd prefer to take 5 books I hadn't read yet. That would certainly help pass the time!

Time won't let me go

I am a consummate time-waster.

Seriously -- I could probably write a book on the art of wasting time.

Lately I've had trouble finding time to read my Bible, work on my Battlefield of the Mind study, read the latest book on my list, etc.

And yet somehow I never seem to have trouble finding time to move my cars multiple times a day in Parking Wars, commit random crimes in Mob Wars, monitor how my crops are growing on MyFarm, rearrange my flair, check the latest Twitter action, etc.

Obviously my priorities are all out of whack.

So I've removed all of my Facebook applications for now. I'm also cutting way back on my internet time, and as of Saturday (the first time slot Time Warner had available), I'll be completely cable-less.

(Which isn't to say I'm swearing off all TV, but all of the shows I watch except two are available to watch free online. And now I won't be tempted to watch anything and everything that comes on as a time-filler.)

Hopefully these changes will be the catalyst I need to get my act together.

An opening in the trees now cheered him with the hopes that the church bridge was at hand. The wavering reflection of a silver star in the bosom of the brook told him that he was not mistaken. He saw the walls of the church dimly glaring under the trees beyond. He recollected the place where Brom Bones's ghostly competitor had disappeared. "If I can but reach that bridge," thought Ichabod, "I am safe." Just then he heard the black steed panting and blowing close behind him; he even fancied that he felt his hot breath. Another convulsive kick in the ribs, and old Gunpowder sprang upon the bridge; he thundered over the resounding planks; he gained the opposite side; and now Ichabod cast a look behind to see if his pursuer should vanish, according to rule, in a flash of fire and brimstone.

Just then he saw the goblin rising in his stirrups, and in the very act of hurling his head at him. Ichabod endeavored to dodge the horrible missile, but too late. It encountered his cranium with a tremendous crash- he was tumbled headlong into the dust, and Gunpowder, the black steed, and the goblin rider, passed by like a whirlwind.

The next morning the old horse was found without his saddle, and with the bridle under his feet, soberly cropping the grass at his master's gate. Ichabod did not make his appearance at breakfast- dinner-hour came, but no Ichabod. The boys assembled at the school-house and strolled idly about the banks of the brook; but no schoolmaster. Hans Van Ripper now began to feel some uneasiness about the fate of poor Ichabod, and his saddle. An inquiry was set on foot, and after diligent investigation they came upon his traces.

In one part of the road leading to the church was found the saddle trampled in the dirt; the tracks of horses' hoofs deeply dented in the road, and evidently at furious speed, were traced to the bridge, beyond which, on the bank of a broad part of the brook, where the water ran deep and black, was found the hat of the unfortunate Ichabod, and close beside it a shattered pumpkin.

The OmNom Phenomenon

Happy Sunday to all!

My latest dessert post has solicited an intriguing response with one specific word, and I have set out on a quest to understand the meaning of: nom, or om nom

Seems kind of funny, this random word...but it has been popping up in various places. So here is what I found on the Urban Dictionary:

1. om nom

An onomatopoeical adjective based on the sound emitted when something is "oh so tasty" (either through hunger or flavorological value) that one gnaws through it without regard to cleanliness or etiquette. This sort of ravenous eating will often result in an "om nom nom nom" noise being emitted from the eater.

Arthur: Gosh, I haven't eaten for days.
Dirk: Me neither. We're both starving equally.
Arthur: Look! A whole cooked chicken with side of mashed potatoes and a warm/soft dinner roll!
Dirk: We have to decide which of us gets to eat first. To be fair, we should rock-paper-scissors for it.
Arthur: Om nom nom nom nom!
Dirk: Arthur, you're a jerk. A real knee-biter.

2. om nom

The sound of ravenous eating. Popularized by the character Cookie Monster on Sesame street, it is now used commonly in speech, especially among younger people. Cookie Monster exclaims "OM NOM NOM NOM" when gobbling down cookies (and whatever else goes in his mouth).

You can "om nom" on things besides food... for example, play-eating babies' toes to make them laugh.

Just for Fun: omnomnomnom.com is a pop culture website where people submit their own silly photos that have been manipulated in Paint to resemble monsters eating various things, including people and pets.

As usual any legitimate criticism leveled against Barack Hussein Obama by the McCain camp is being attempted to be stifled by the typical whine of racism. The racist card is now being associated with Conservative voters demonstrating their antipathy toward Obama.

The BHO camp has taken their “guns and Bibles” line of Christians and extended it to all untrusting angry Conservative voters as racists against Obama.

Bob Dylan - The Bootleg Series, Vol. 8

Bob Dylan - Ain't Talkin' [Alternate Version]

Undoubtedly, the most influential folk singer/songwriter is non other than Bob Dylan. And what a great time to be a Dylan fan, he's just released his latest Bootleg series, The Bootleg Series, Vol. 8: Tell Tale Signs - Rare and Unreleased 1989-2006, last Tuesday, and in a few weeks a (fan?) documentary Inside Bob Dylan's Jesus Years: Busy Being Born Again also comes out.

Where they last left off in the long-running so-called bootleg series, #7, those recording were rare and unreleased tracks from 1961 and 1966 (which included his very first recorded song, "When I Got Troubles"). I'm pleased to see that #8 focuses more on his recent material, from his No Mercy (1989) to Modern Times (2006). It's compelling because it would seem that only his last three releases (Time Out of Mind, Love and Theft, and Modern Times) seems to be in the public's eye because they charted in the top 10 on the US charts.

Anyway, although there's no credit(s) on whoever compiled these tracks, it's evident to me that Larry "Ratso" Sloman must've had a hand in suggestions: not only did he write the introduction in the 60-page booklet, but he also painstakingly wrote notes for each of the 27 songs. I'm glad that Columbia Records is letting this massive fan put together the series, because only Dylan's hardcore fans/completist can truly make this worthwhile.

The Sloman essay details about his first GWW (Great White Wonder) bootleg to more recent quotes about his 2006 album, Modern Times. I suggest that anyone picking up this album to read it, as I suspect the majority of fans won't take the time to read the liner notes.

I had to dig out his last album, Modern Times to compare some of the tracks, to see what the differences are: and they are far apart. The alternative version of "Ain't Talkin'" is a little more upbeat, his vocals seems a little faster-paced. The version that did made it on Modern Times has more space in the song. When it comes down to it, both version of the song is amazing, but I felt the Modern Times version ultimately fit the album.

Bob Dylan - Mississippi (Unreleased Time Out Of Mind)

Obviously the blatant example that people will note is the three very different version of "Mississippi". We're given two unreleased version of the song on the Bootleg CDs, but the version that appeared on Tell Tale Signs is nothing like stripped acoustic version #1 or the what sounds like an evening verision #2. What a rare glimpse into Bob Dylan's brilliant mind.

Also, one interesting thing that I've observed is that as Dylan ages, his voice becomes more and more bluesy, so songs like "Marchin' to the City" (unreleased) and "Lonesome Day Blues" (live) sounds even better as he's gotten older!

Columbia Records did the smart thing and released this as a stripped down CD (retails $10), but I would recommend paying an extra $5 to get the 2-disc edition with slipcase and a 60-page booklet... which I think most people are going to get. Super hardcore Dylan fans might want to check out the deluxe version of The Bootleg Series #8, as it comes with a bonus 12-track CD, a slipcase, a hardbound book (150 pages). The price is pretty steep: over $100, you know you're worth it.
